Display and presentation of original documents - Budapest - BUDAPEST, I.

Program description

Our small exhibition is based on the archival material of our Map Collection, where we display blueprints and plans of existing monument buildings, related to the main theme of the European Heritage Days. In the material you can see blueprints of notable Hungarian castles, bridges, and churches of different denominations. You can see fascinating unique documents, such as the plans of the fortified village, Saroltavár, or the plans of the county jail of Balassagyarmat which has a sole, circular ground plan.
On the occasion of the Andor Dudits Memorial Year – whose 150th birth anniversary is celebrated this year – the National Archives of Hungary complied artworks of the famous painter and shows them to the public. This time our visitors can see some of his drafts and artworks, such as his drawings for the seccos of the main building of the National Archives of Hungary, which can be rarely seen on display.
Related to the theme “Heritage and Community” we exhibit visual design plans and archival photographs of various industrial and monument buildings, thus our visitor can see photographs on different stages of construction works of the Hunting-ammunition, Fuse, and Metalware Factory (today: Videoton), the main building of the Hungarian Commercial Bank of Pest, or the Nuclear Power Plant of Paks.
In addition we display for the centenary of World War I, and for the 120th anniversary of the Hungarian Patent Office patents of great importance from the 20th century, such as the blueprints of a Torpedo Boat, designed by the Ganz Works, or the invention of István Stella, the magnetophon. Or visitors can see László József Bíró’s – the inventor of the ballpoint pen – request for travel visa to the United States.
This rich material will be introduced and explained by our expert colleagues, by which you can get known further interesting details about the selected and displayed documents.

Metal Detecting in Archaeology. Civil and Professional Cooperation - Budapest - BUDAPEST, V.

Program description

Many people are interested in treasure hunting, and metal detectors are considered as a modern tool for this. However, not everyone is authorized to use this tool in Hungary. Private persons are prohibited by the law to search for finds at archaeological sites, because, while collecting the objects, they destroy their archaeological context. Only authorized professional archaeologists are allowed to remove any object from archaeological sites with proper documentation. The archaeological profession has, however, recognized the significance of metal detecting in modern research as well as the potential role and of amateurs who are experts in handling the detector. The new legislation has also created the legal framework to involve the latter into archaeological research, and Hungary can boast already a number of positive examples for such a co-operation. We invited archaeologists, museum directors and “civil” metal detecting enthusiasts for a discussion, all of whom already have experience and results in this respect, and whose joint efforts can serve as an example for similar initiatives.
The program is connected to the metal detecting workshop organized on 17 September at the Pomáz-Nagykovácsi-puszta site, also in the framework of Cultural Heritage Days.

„Once upon a time, girls in Northern Hungary used to wear a lot of skirts” - Budapest - BUDAPEST, XI.

Búcsúból, Mátraverebély Szentkútról hazafelé...
Egy palóc ház előtt
12 féle főkötője is volt egy jól öltözködő asszonynak!
Program description

Éva Bocsi, folk artist and winner of the „Masterpiece of Hungarian Craft Award” keeps the traditions of Northern Hungary, Salgótarján and its surrounding little villages, Kazár and Vizslás alive. She wears the traditional costume herself on festive occasions. Local women abandoned their traditional costumes in recent decades, and from the pieces of their old garments they produced clothes for their purchased dolls, small sewn replicas of the originals.
Éva Bocsi learned from her mother how to prepare the small version of traditional costumes and how to dress the dolls in local costume. However, she continued to develop this activity and started preparing the body of the doll herself. The traditional costumes of these handmade dolls not only represent the old customs, but also illustrate traditional events of the former village life, and thus enable spectators to enjoy the former reality of old traditional villages.

A presentation of the collection of essays and catalogue of the exhibition entitled The Wives of Princes and Freedom of Religion in Transylvania - Veszprém - VESZPRÉM

Fejedelemasszonyok és a vallásszabadság Erdélyben című tanulmánykötet-kiállítási katalógus
Program description

The Blessed Gizella Archdiocese Collection has published a historical album on the lives and contributions of the wives of Hungarian princes of Transylvania and the freedom of religion in Transylvania. The album contains a preface by Gyula Márfi, Archbishop of the Veszprém diocese, and József Steinbach, Bishop of the Transdanubian Calvinist diocese, as well as summaries in English of the essays and richly colored illustrations of works of the Turkish art of the miniature, which flourished under the rule of Mehmed the Conqueror and Suleiman the Magnificent. The album, which offers an overview of religious and educational policies of the Principality of Transylvania in the 16th and 17th centuries, examines moments in history when the wives of the princes of the region exerted a strong influence on church and educational policy, theology, and the relationships among the various denominations. Vested with political power, they exerted their influence as leaders of government, organizers of educational life, and cultural ambassadors, and also as Catholics or Protestants who were resolved in and committed to their faith. The exhibition organized by the Blessed Gizella Archdiocese Collection in 2013 examined the history of ecumenism on the 445th anniversary of the famous National Assembly in Torda (today Turda in Romania), at which freedom of religion and a law of tolerance were proclaimed, and also the 400th anniversary of the election of Gábor Bethlen as Prince of Transylvania.
The book contains the texts of presentations that were held as part of the series of lectures entitled The Wives of Princes and Freedom of Religion in Transylvania, which was organized in cooperation with the Veszprém Archiepiscopal and Cathedral Chapter Archive in 2013, as well as articles by authors who were asked to contribute to the volume by the Beatified Gizella Collection on the occasion of the commemorative year.

Program description

In the third year of the First World War, in a ceremony marked by pomp and splendor, the last king of the Hungarian Kingdom, a kingdom which had been in existence for a millennium, was crowned. On December 30, 1916, with the coronation of King Charles IV and Queen Zita of Bourbon-Parma, the Bishop of Veszprém exercised his right to crown the queen and the king of Hungary, a right which had been preserved and observed over the course of centuries, for the last time. The bishop who performed the ceremony was Baron Károly Hornig, a great and selfless Maecenas of the time. Charles IV and Zita of Bourbon-Parma took the responsibilities of rule seriously and prepared diligently before assuming the throne, praying together frequently and pledging to serve their people with love, devotion, and respect for the legacy of Saint Stephen of Hungary. Charles IV chose the path of peace and reconciliation for Hungary, a country that had been militarily, economically, and even ethically drained by the war. In doing so, he trod in the footsteps of Saint Stephen, Prince Emeric, and the other saints of the Árpád House.

The permanent exhibition will be open from May 4 to October 31, every day from 10:00 to 18:00.
From November 1 2016 to May 3 it will be open to visitors who have made arrangements ahead of time to see it.

Program description

In the southeastern corner of Transylvania, at the bend of the Carpathian Mountains—a mountain range that separates Western and Eastern Christianity, Western and Eastern culture, and the Western and Eastern frames of mind—one finds the region known as Felső-Háromszék, or Upper Three Seats. In the center of the region lies the city of Kézdivásárhely (Târgu Secuiesc in Romanian), surrounded by the settlements that once belonged administratively to the city. The largest of these villages is Gelence (Ghelința in Romanian). The residents of the village are Székelys, who heroically defended the eastern borders of the Hungarian kingdom for centuries. In the Árpád-era church in the village, which is dedicated to Saint Ladislaus, one finds a fresco cycle of the Legend of Saint Ladislaus, the most beautiful and complete frescos depicting the life of the king, as well as frescos depicting the Passion of Christ, the Legend of Saint Jacob the Apostle, Judgment Day, and the story of Saint Catherine of Alexandria. The exhibition in the Saint Emeric Piarist and Garrison Church, which has been organized by the Blessed Gizella Archdiocese Collection, offers a rich sampling of the wondrous treasures of the church in Gelence.
The temporary exhibition is open from May 8 to October 31, 2016 every day except Mondays from 10:00 to 17:00.
